Nearly one-third of the world‘s arable land has been lost to erosion. Land resources are under increasing pressure while demand for food is growing. Land degradation is mainly caused by human activities, exacerbated by climate change. Land restoration and improved land management halts and reverses degradation, builds soil carbon and contributes to climate change mitigation. This side event focuses on the challenges of land degradation, the goal of a land degradation-neutral world, the benefits of soil carbon sequestration and the importance of land restoration capacity building. The event is organized by the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources of Iceland.
